I am a compassionate, supportive catalyst for healing, growth and change. I support people to feel better about themselves, meet their goals, improve their relationships, reduce stress and heal from past losses and traumas. I have a holistic, eclectic approach, using a variety of techniques tailored to each individual's needs. I support clients to heal and integrate mind, body and spirit.

I have been a licensed psychotherapist in private practice since January, 1990. Prior to that I worked in social service, nonprofit agencies, crisis facilities, and school/day-care settings for 20 years.

I offer individual, relationship and family psychotherapy and counseling to adults and children. Short-term, problem focused counseling and long-term emotional therapy are both available. I see clients in my peaceful home office setting in the redwoods of Soquel, just south of Santa Cruz, California. I'm also available for email and short-term telephone counseling, coaching and consultation when appropriate. My fees are $100/session.

The way I work with individuals, couples or families depends on their needs, preferences, issues and temperaments. My eclectic, interactive work is informed by humanistic, relational, psychodynamic, somatic, transpersonal, spiritual, cognitive-behavioral, and family systems approaches.

I facilitate a support group for Highly Sensitive Persons. 15-20% of the human population are born with a highly sensitive nervous system. Of that 70% are introverts and 30% are extroverts. For more information on HSPs, see Elaine Aron's book, The Highly Sensitive Person—How to Thrive When the World Overwhelms You, and see Jacquelyn Strickland's website, www.lifeworkshelp.com , for another perspective. Jim Hallowes' site contains links to many other HSP resources.

A woman I'll call Sue is a typical example of many clients I've worked with successfully. Sue initially came to me with job stress, social anxiety, depression and fear of intimacy. Her doctor had recently diagnosed her with fibromyalgia, a chronic pain and sleep disorder. Sue described herself as shy and easily overwhelmed. Her family felt that she was just "too sensitive." Sue felt lonely and wanted a loving committed relationship, but felt at a loss in the dating world.

I worked with Sue in individual therapy as well as in my stress-reduction class and HSP support group. In individual therapy I empathized with Sue's emotional pain and gently challenged her low self-image. I helped her explore unresolved abuse and family of origin issues. I taught Sue assertiveness skills to help overcome shyness and enhance self-esteem, and autogenic training and self-hypnosis to relieve her anxiety, insomnia and pain symptoms. As Sue's mood improved and her self-esteem grew I coached her in relationship and dating skills in a style suited to her highly sensitive temperament. In the stress reduction class, Sue learned to cope with and reduce her job stress.

Making meaningful connections with others like herself in the HSP support group helped reduce Sue's isolation. As Sue discovered some of the positive qualities of being highly sensitive - conscientiousness, high intuition, creativity, supportiveness, and a deeper awareness of one's own feelings – her self-confidence increased. She appreciated the group's strategies for coping with over-stimulation and life in a not-so-sensitive world. back to the top
